About the Event
2023 Winter Italian Film Series: Iconic Faces, Iconic Places
Series Description: The films in this winter’s series come from the Venice International Film Festival’s list of classic works that have changed the collective memory of Italy and that every Italian should know. Full of wit and still-relevant social commentary, the films bring together the legendary stars, directors, and screenwriters of the golden era of 1950s and 1960s Italian cinema in stories filmed on location in Milan, Sicily, and Rome.
The January film will be Miracle in Milan (Miracolo a Milano). Dir. Vittorio De Sica, 1951 (100 mins).
On the outskirts of Milan, a band of vagabonds work together to form a shantytown. When it is discovered that the land they occupy contains oil, it’s up to the cherubic orphan Totò (Francesco Golisano) to save their community from developers in this bighearted ode to the nobility of everyday people.
