Join the Dante Alighieri Society Book Club for a discussion of Trapped in Tuscany: Liberated by Buffalo Soldiers by Tullio Bruno Bertini.
In this remarkable memoir, Bertini recounts his childhood experiences in Italy during World War II. Born in Boston to Tuscan immigrants, he traveled to his family’s village of Diecimo near Lucca as a child and found himself caught in wartime Italy. As the conflict reached Tuscany, Bertini experienced life under Fascism and German occupation before the area was liberated by soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 92nd Infantry Division, the famed Buffalo Soldiers. The young Bertini became an interpreter and errand boy for the soldiers and formed friendships that remained among his most memorable wartime experiences.
