Description: In 1310, the same years that Giotto was working on his famous and revolutionary frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, the sculpture and architect Lorenzo Maitani was undertaking an ambitious program of reliefs for the facade of the cathedral in Orvieto. This lecture is on these remarkable reliefs, which seem to us surprisingly advanced for their time. Maitani's scenes from Genesis, the New Testament, and the Last Judgment are some of the most powerful images of these texts in late medieval art.
